Our Curriculum
Curriculum Intent Statement
Bourne to inspire others, include everyone and empower ourselves
NUTURE. INNOVATE. COLLABORATE. EMPATHISE.
At Bourne Primary School, the curriculum is designed to: recognise children’s prior learning, provide first hand learning experiences, allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers.
Every child is recognised as a unique individual. We believe in inspiring and empowering our children and celebrating differences within our school; making Bourne an inclusive and creative learning community.
The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values. We consistently provide enhanced opportunities to engage in themed learning and we believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time in our lives, where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge. Therefore, educational visits, immersion days, physical activity and outdoor learning are at the heart of our thematic, enriched curriculum. We believe these first-hand experiences equip our children with lifelong memories that enhance and embed their learning.
Parental and community involvement is an essential part of our curriculum. We endeavour to educate the children and school community to create a culture of positive well-being and mental health. Children leave the school with enquiring minds and embedded life skills. They are secondary ready and have the confidence to take risks, be evaluative and become life-long learners.
Bourne's Big Questions
At Bourne Primary School our Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 curriculum are planned around 'Big Questions'. These questions promote an enquiry approach to learning, with an emphasis on deepening understanding. Our 'Big Questions' are deliberately open ended to ensure a broad methodology including feelings, attitudes and understanding. They enable children to go beyond memorising dates and facts to develop new skills or deepen existing ones through an engaging cross-curricular approach.
The 'Big Questions' for each year group can be found on year group pages.
