Our Curriculum
Bourne to inspire others, include everyone and empower ourselves
NUTURE. INNOVATE. COLLABORATE. EMPATHISE.
The curriculum at Bourne is designed to: recognise children’s prior learning, provide first hand learning experiences, allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers.
The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values. We consistently provide enhanced opportunities to engage in themed learning and we believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time in our lives, where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge. Therefore, educational visits, immersion days, physical activity and outdoor learning are at the heart of our thematic, enriched curriculum. We believe these first-hand experiences equip our children with lifelong memories that enhance and embed their learning.
Parental and community involvement is an essential part of our curriculum. We endeavour to educate the children and school community to create a culture of positive well-being and mental health. Children leave the school with enquiring minds and embedded life skills. They are secondary ready and have the confidence to take risks, be evaluative and become life-long learners.
We establish a sense of belonging, celebrate diversity and encourage innovation and collaboration through demonstrating our N.I.C.E Values:
- Nurture – to care for and protect each other and our school; to stay positive and aim high
- Innovate – to make changes to our world through problem solving and creativity
- Collaborate - to work as a team to share ideas or create something new; to know how and when to be a leader
- Empathise – to listen to understand and share the feelings of each other
In addition, the school has our N.I.C.E rules. The N.I.C.E rules support pupils to follow the school’s core values. The N.I.C.E rules are:
- N.I.C.E words and actions – We use kind words and actions; we treat each other how we wish to be treated.
- N.I.C.E listening – When another person is speaking, our eyes follow the speaker, we are silent and our bodies and hands are still.
- N.I.C.E sitting – We sit crossed legged on the carpet; if we are sitting on a chair, all legs of the chair are on the floor; we are still.
- N.I.C.E learning – We demonstrate N.I.C.E listening and sitting. We are ‘Give it a Flamingos!’, we give everything a go.
- N.I.C.E walking – We are respectful of others when we move around the school. We walk in silence; we walk in a line; we walk on the left.
We encourage resilience, through the use of our flamingo icon and its reference to ‘Fabulous Floyd’ a real flamingo who never gave up when faced with a challenge. At Bourne, we are all ‘Give it a go flamingos!’
