Spanish - The Subject Story

Languages(1)

Intent

As a culturally diverse school, we at Bourne Primary value the importance of languages and the role they play in modern life.  We aim to develop children’s love of languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. Learning Spanish helps pupils to develop communication skills and extends their knowledge of how language works.

We aim to embed the essential skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in line with the National Curriculum for Key Stage 2 and build the children’s cultural awareness. We teach Spanish from year 3 to year 6, sequencing the children’s learning in such a way that they build on and consolidate prior knowledge.

Implementation

Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences and undertake simple reading activities. They follow a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum.

Impact

The children are assessed and graded in accordance with age related expectations using teacher assessments which inform and support future learning.  These grades are recorded on Otrack.  Our Spanish curriculum develops a sound knowledge of basic grammar and vocabulary which builds on prior learning.  This knowledge provides a building block, preparing the pupils for further language learning in Key Stage 3.
